Also which romance anime is your favorite in those categories? For shoujo I would say Fruits Basket, for shounen Inuyasha, and for seinen Kaguya-sama: Love is War. They're all good in different ways but I feel that each series plays very strongly into their core demographic in terms of writing good romance.

My fav romance tend to be seinen like Ah My Goddess. School Rumble is also up there with Toradora. I used to like shoujo but nowadays I can't stand watching it. Dropped Fruits Basket and not doing Sugar Apple s2. I feel that growing older makes it impossible to self insert as a shoujo pretty boy. Lol.

Shoujo and Josei genres usually have more realistic and refined take on romance. I personally don't mind the genre if the romance is well written, but truth to be told, I'm not a fan of too many romantic elements in anime. Or shows entirely focused on romance.

I tend to find that romance written by women to be a little better
funnily enough the romance written by women writes the female characters like they're actually lobotomized and the male characters either like serial rapists (cough Boys over Flowers cough) or the "he's not an asshole just misunderstood." (also Boys over Flowers). Which is bonkers considered it's written towards women
the ones written for men i.e., seinen usually have the best male/female characters in romances
absolute joke to consider shounen romances, you'd find more romance in a parasocial relationship with a hottub streamer

I don't like or dislike romance... I simply don't understand what romance is..
For me romance is a formal word for sexual desires..
So my stance on romance in any genre is neutral.. I'm sitting on the fence for once..

What would count as seinen romance anyway, I can't name a single one.
For manhwa I prefer josei smut.

Besides, are we talking about pure romance or just romance included?

@JaniSIr There is plenty of seinen romance out there, but if you don't consume it then it makes sense that you can't name any. Speaking of which I didn't even know josei smut was a thing but I guess it makes sense. I've always thought smut targeted towards female readers were incredibly rare though.
@TRC_Randy I was thinking along the lines of anything MAL has listed as romance but a lot of anime have romantic elements in them even though they aren't labeled as such so those would count as well. So basically just romance included, like with Inuyasha I mentioned.

Well, there is definitely some. It's nice since male targeted ones tend to have those over acted professional porn aesthetics, instead of a natural real life couple vibes.

Favourite shoujo romance and romance generally would be KareKano by a mile. Seinen - probably Air. I can't immediately think of any good shounen romances, though I could probably remember a couple if I went down my list carefully.

Definitely shoujo. I think because of the whole patriarchy thing, girls have to understand boys as a survival skill, whilst boys can generally get away with not understanding girls, and as a result, shoujo tend to have love interests with more interiority of their own than shounen/seinen. (Just a general trend, obviously there are plenty of exceptions.)

@logopolis Or maybe, men just in general think less emotionally.
Why does everything have to be an immediate attack on women by the boogeyman?

The series that focuses more on the characters rather than showing the romance between two characters generally have the best romance, doesn’t matter which demographic is it.

Shoujo and seinen is second. Shonen is the worst at it, particularly Naruto lol.

Obviously shojo/josei as the first is the epytome of romance, the quintessence of it. And the second is the "grown-up" shojo which shows adult women's love.

Shounen sometimes does good romance but it's generally not a big focus.
Seinen has it's merits
Shoujo is a bit too idealistic and saccharine
So my vote is for Josei but as it's lumped with shoujo (which I tie second with Seinen) I'm voting in spirit not in the poll
Edit: decided to vote Seinen over the last one i like the romance a little more then shoujo and the poll is biased combing it with josei (sorry josei)

First, we have to say that a younger male demographic, or "shounen", is likely not going to care that much about romance, or at least that's the generalization. So in that sense it makes sense that a lot of shounen series wouldn't put much effort into that aspect. Gender of the writer isn't a factor in that equation. I don't watch many things from the shoujo side, but I have to imagine it's a similar situation, where the younger demograpchic means the romance isn't all that fleshed out compared to Josei or the older demo.

Same, I guess. As along the characters and their relationships are well written/developed that has some emotional impact, then I don't mind if romance is the main focus of the show regardless of genre.
